Twelve years ago Jeff Curran began his journey to become the best fighter in the world at his weight class. After a roller coaster of experiences in the sport, Curran was cut from the organization where his weight class is most well known and home to the bantaweight world champions. Quitting not an option, Curran regrouped and began his climb back to the top.

Curran takes us behind the scenes of his training camp for the most important fight of his life and lets the viewer into his past, present and future as a man and as a fighter. “This is the Fight” is Jeff’s saying for what life is all about. The trials and tribulations we deal with in life are the real fights, the ones that prepare us for times like these. Enjoy the trailer that tells the story of what is to come.
15 quick questions for Amir following his big win over Brad Blackburn in UFN 20.

1. Did you have the same game plan going into this fight as you did Baroni?

Every fight and fighter is different ,but in general the game plan was similar. Both guys had dangerous hands, and I wanted to keep pressure on while trying to nullify any big shots.

2. What was different about Baroni and Blackburn?

Baroni wanted to kill me, and Blackburn is a gentleman, however still wanted to kill me.

3. There were a couple times that it looked like you could have put Blackburn away but you decided to take him down instead what was your thought process there?

Watching the fight now I see that he was more hurt than I thought at the time, but I am always trying to evolve my game and having an opportunity to take someone down and work some ground and pound was also important to me.

4. Did Blackburn ever have you hurt?

No, sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt. Except for the punches. yes those hurt.

5. Was it more nerve racking fighting in front of a hometown crowd or did it pump you up more?

No, if anything I really enjoyed the experience. Walking out to the fight I really felt a palpable energy of support, and it was definitely great to be fighting there.

6. When you were on TUF7 everyone categorized you as a kick boxer, then you submitted nearly all of your opponents and they started saying you’re a submission fighter. Now that you have shown your striking skills against Baroni and Blackburn people are saying you are a Muay Thai guy now? How would you describe yourself?

Kind of a loose cannon. The police chief is always yelling at me for dangerous suspect pursuit car chases, having shootouts in public places, and the yellow pages missing after perp interrogations. But I play by my own rules, nobody else’s. Wait, is that Lethal Weapon?

7. Many people believe your fight against Hendricks was stopped early. What were your thoughts on that and how did that loss effect you?

Obviously it was a decision i didn’t agree with, but to put much more thought into it after that is counter productive in my eyes. I felt like I made a mistake, and whether the consequence was warranted or not is immaterial at this point. i just see it as a lesson learned, and want to use that to make myself as good as I can be.

8. There were a lot of critics and doubters talking about you after the Hendricks fight, now that you have bounced back convincingly against 2 very tough opponents, do you have anything to say to them?

What doubters? Did they say anything mean? I hate it when they say anything mean. Probably they were kidding.

9. Who would you like to fight next, or in the near future?

Anyone who is talented and a challenge for me. The great part about that is, in the UFC at 170, that will not be an issue.

10. A lot of fans that attended the live show are wondering what the name of the song you walked to was?

It was Odissea Mediterranea by Laera. I dig that song.

11. What TV shows are you watching these days?

Probably my favorites right now are “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”, “30 Rock”, and I hate to admit this, but “Jersey Shore” has turned into one of my new favorite Quotable’s. That’s da situation.

12. What are the last 5 songs played on your iPod?

Some Euro techno mixes I like to do cardio to, probably some Tiger Army stuff, Raffi, and Beethoven. But not the Beethoven you’re thinking of, the death metal Beethoven.

13. Anything coming up for you on your time off?

I’m going to try to get back over to Holland to train, but other than that, probably just pursuing a career in a rock band.

14. How long before we you want to get back in the Octagon?

Well thats up tp the UFC but I hope be back this spring.

15. Anyone you would like to recognize before we wrap up?

Nope, absolutely no one comes to mind. At all. Wait, yeah actually…. no, no, no one at all.

ok heres the real answer to 15

I have such a great team of people behind me, my traininers for giving their all when they help me, Marco Van Den Broek, Mark Beecher, Cameron Diffley, Norm Turner, SuckerPunch, my entire family for their unconditional support, TapouT and Sprawl for sticking by me through thick and thin, Spike TV and Spike.com for letting the country see how great I am in front of a camera, FighterWarehouse, Hayabusa and finally TapouT Sports Nutrition for helping me get in the best shape I can be for a fight.

Jason David Frank is well-known to kids and pop culture fans as the longest-tenured Mighty Morphin Power Ranger. Many young MMA fans grew up watching him as one of the Power Rangers, and most have uttered the phrase, “It’s Morphin time!” at one point or another. But Jason’s martial arts skills go beyond stunt doubles and dummies; he’s been training martial arts very seriously since he was 12 years old. He’s started a clothing line called Jesus Didn’t Tap and even created his own form of combat fighting, called Tose Kune Do. Now 35 years old, Jason has decided to step into the world of MMA.

Jason’s main training partner is the UFC’s Melvin Guillard, who has helped to transition his martial arts game to MMA. He’s also been training with Raul Marquez former world boxing champ and BJJ coach Larry Shealy and Charles Dos Anjos. Frank has been doing all of this out of his own school, Rising Sun MMA, in anticipation of his debut in mixed martial arts. We recently spoke with Jason to find out about his feelings on his past with the Rangers, and his move to MMA.

Phil Lanides: Does your experience with the show help or hurt you?

Jason David Frank: As many fans as I have right now, if you look at the demographics of 18-34, which is the MMA demographic, I have that fan base from there. Looking at my age, a short-term career will be good for me because I will be able to give my fans what they want. I went to an anime convention recently, and they were asking me about fighting. They were all over 18 years-old. So I think there will be a lot of interest in my entrance into the sport. As long as the fights look good, I think it’ll be great.

PL: Tose Kune Do (The Way of the Fighting Fists) is your own style of fighting. Tell us about that.

JDF: I modified and adjusted [disarming] gun techniques. People don’t hold guns like they used to on the streets, so I took different moves, got away from the politics of martial arts, and came up with Tose Kune Do. We’re very serious at my gym; you have to earn your belt at my school. Bruce Lee, who created Jeet Kune Do, is an influence of mine, and I like to follow his philosophy. There are many great martial arts out there. But when the time comes, the question is whether or not you can take care of yourself and your family on the streets. That’s the real test. Jute Keen Do is the way of the intercepting fists, focused more on defense. I wanted to cut out the stuff that doesn’t work. I was doing MMA, in essence, before MMA became big. MMA is the philosophy I had in 1994 when I invented Tose Kune Do. We were doing sprawl and brawl at that time, and I’m excited to see how my fighting art will do in competitive MMA.

PL: Is it applicable to MMA?

JDF: I think so. My style was missing the ground fighting. I have my blue belt in BJJ from Gracie Baja now, but we needed to have that ground game integrated into Tose Kune Do. There was a blank there. So we added wrestling, BJJ, etc. to it. Melvin Guillard has really helped add the wrestling. I needed to get with someone who could put it all together for me.

PL: Why have you waited so long to have your first fight?

JDF: I was supposed to fight in 2007, but it fell through. In truth, I’ve wanted to put the work in until I’m ready. I know I have a target on my back. Everyone is going to want to beat up the Green Ranger. But I am no Kimbo: I’ve been training for a very long time. I wanted to get in there before, but I got injured. But I’ll be ready when the time comes.

PL: What is your ultimate goal in MMA?
JDF: Just to go out there and do my best, and prove that I’m a real fighter. I’m not looking for any titles specifically. Ultimately, I want to give my fans something to watch and be proud of.

PL: Why did you sign with Brian Butler [president] and the SuckerPunch organization?

JDF: I’ve worked with Jesus Didn’t Tap, and Brian’s been one guy that I’ve stuck with. He’s stand-up. I believe in him, I believe in his fighters. It’s a first-class operation. Being from one of the top kid’s shows of all time, I want to be with a first-class organization, and that’s SuckerPunch.

PL: Any message you want to leave for your fans?

JDF: Please support my fights, and I hope I put on a good show. It won’t be any putties or monsters at the end of my fists and feet. It’s going to be for real this time.

SuckerPunch proudly announces the newest addition to the SuckerPunch family, Damarques Johnson. The 170 pound Johnson is best known for his time on The Ultimate Fighter season nine Team USA vs. Team UK.
Johnson made it all the way to the finals where he had a hard fight against Team UK’s Jame Wilkes. Damarques earned himself legions of fans because of his straight up style and no-nonsense attitude outside the cage.
Johnson served 8 years in the Army where he took up Jiu-Jitsu to keep himself in shape. After his enlistement was up, he crossed paths with Jeremy Horn and immediately began his professional career. Johnson trains with one of the most “elite” camps, Elite Performance, which includes legendary fighters Jeremy “Gumby” Horn, Joe Riggs and Travis Wuiff. SuckerPunch looks forward to providing Damarques Johnson with the best representation available in MMA and expects great things from him both inside and outside the cage.

Jens,
Just watched your fight and it hurt to see you get submitted! I’m not an MMA guy myself but a serious fan of the sport.

I too know what its like to feel like you are “getting old”

In my industry I’m kinda like you, an icon, but I must admit it is hard to see other guys come up and take over. We all have our time in the sun and yours, or mine, does not have to end.

You are an ambassador for the sport of MMA and a true class act. When we see many kids coming up who are just “fighters” you are a serious legend that is to be respected and admired. Regardless if you fight again, or not, just remember that you have such a platform to encourage people (both young and old) please know that you inspire me.

You seem like such a fine person, so don’t lose hope my friend, there is much more in your future…in and out of the cage!

Thanks for being such a class act.

Ryan Sturdy won a decision over EliteXC vet John Doyle at the M-1 Challenge friday night. Sturdy took this fight on a weeks notice and moved up a weight class to light heavy. This fight did not come without more surprises as on the night of the weigh ins Sturdy’s original opponent Abdullah Ahmady was declared ineligible to fight by the commission due the the fact that his record could not be confirmed. Doyle was the last minute replacement.

Sturdy suffered a cut above the eye due to an accidental head butt which almost stopped the fight, but Ryan was able to turn up the pressure and the officials allowed him to continue on to a unanimous decision.

MMAweekly gave sturdy the unofficial fight of the night honors.

6/1/09
Ryan Sturdy the current Extreme Challenge middleweight champion will move up in weight to take a short notice fight to join the World Team at M-1 Challenge on June 5th. Ryan is on a 3 fight win streak and will put his 9-2-1 record on the line as he faces team Turkey’s Abdullah Ahmady.

The fifth edition of the 2009 “M-1 Challenge Presented by Affliction” is scheduled to emanate from Memorial Hall in Kansas City, KS on Friday, June 5. The event will be headlined by a challenge bout featuring Team USA East (1-0).

Team USA East will look to retain sole possession of first place in Group C when it takes on Team Finland (1-0).
In addition to the headline challenge fight between USA East and Finland, two additional two matchups between England vs. France and Turkey vs. the World Team are also scheduled.

May 23 marks the second showing for UFC heavyweight newcomer Patrick “HD” Barry. When SuckerPunch first declared that Barry would be the best and most athletic striker in the division before his debut at UFC 92 in December, the claim was met with little enthusiasm. But after his devastating TKO victory over Dan Evensen (due to leg kicks), fast-forward five months, and Barry has generated a buzz that has the media and fans eagerly anticipating his next fight.

“I am so excited to be in the UFC, and it’s so important for me to represent where I came from, to use this opportunity to be a positive influence on anyone that I can reach,” said Barry. “The best part in all this for me is going home to New Orleans and seeing how proud I have made the people that have supported me all these years. It’s my goal to continue to make them proud and represent NOLA to the fullest!”

Barry’s child-like enthusiasm for his opportunity to again perform in the UFC is infectious! But “HD” has eyes towards the future, after the final bell of his career. When he is done with fighting, Barry wants to get into motivational speaking, or become involved in some form of mentoring program. Not the typical tune that comes from someone who gets paid to beat people up. “To me it’s a sport… I have never gone into a fight angry or hating my opponent,” Barry said. But make no mistake, Barry is primed and ready to explode on the UFC’s heavyweight division. “All I know about the guy I’m fighting on the 23rd is that he looks like a brawler and that’s fine with me, let’s do it! I can’t wait!”

SuckerPunch Entertainment would like to recognize TapouT, Vandal Eye Wear, and FIGHT!, for supporting the stars in the SuckerPunch stable.
After watching the WEC fights Wednesday night, Jeff “Big Frog” Curran gives us a raw interview about where he is in his career and where he sees it going.

What’s going through your mind when you see Mike Brown, the guy you last fought and took to a very tough decision, defeat Urijah Faber at 2:23 in the first round, the guy you arguably gave the most trouble to until this fight?

Its funny you ask this question because I was arguing with one of my students the day of their fight about how I felt Brown had all the tools to beat Urijah. Now, don’t get me wrong, I definitely feel Urijah had the tools to beat Brown too, but after fighting Brown and Urijah I felt Brown was strong enough to control him and he hits hard if he lands a shot. So that’s my breakdown of the fight, but before it took place I was simply anxious to see the result. Many people feel I beat Mike Brown and after watching the fight myself a number of times I can see where I may have squeeked past him in some way. When I fought Urijah I was way relaxed, like I am when I train with my students.

Nobody ever seems to mention me taking him down, passing his guard, mounting him then taking his back? Its funny how the commentators and his fans looked past that part of the fight. I lost that fight to a simple mistake. I have always been taught to let submissions fall into my lap as a result of their mistakes. I lost sight of the fact that I should have punished him when i had mount or his back then take the neck. What can i say, even monkeys fall from trees. That was my first time ever being caught in a submission in over 60 mma fights. As for Brown, I really wish I just kept it standing. I have a habit of sitting against the fence. Being the strong wrestler he is he was able to take me down. Allthough I was fine on the ground it never looks good to the judges. To sum it up, after watching that fight it just fired me up. I know in my heart my team and fans know that i am still a top contender in 145 and should be considered a huge threat to anyone I fight.

Even though you have been ranked in the top 5 in the world in the featherweight division for some time now, do you feel you get the respect you deserve?

I feel that certain people dont respect me, and thats fine, but overall I have more respect than those that dont respect me may know. If that makes any sense. I am a mainstay in this sport. Sure, I lost to Urijah, I lost to Brown, whatever. Bottom line is if you stay consistant in this sport like I am things have a funny way to balance themselves out for you. I never got into this sport for money. I didn’t get into this sport for fame. I got into this sport to represent Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and my instructors like Pedro Sauer, Frank Cucci, Doug Mango to name a few. I know more than anyone that respect is earned, not given. People that stare at results may see a few key losses, but I see some of the best lessons a guy can ask for in their career. I have won fights that went as close as Mike Brown’s fight with me, I have lost fights where I thought I had won. Bottom line is this: When you fight guys like Matt Serra, Kid Yamamoto, Urijah Faber, Mike Brown etc. it has a funny way of showing who belongs and who doesn’t. Serra, now 3 weight classes over me, couldn’t finish me off or even come close. Yamamoto had his toughest round with me in round 3 and i finished strong. Urijah….he had his luckiest day of his life with me. Brown? Well Brown had won a grind out battle with me and I steared from strategy which cost me the close loss. Respect? Hell yeah I have respect and for anyone who doesn’t respect me all I can say is good for you. I am confident in who i am as a fighter.

They announced you dropping to the bantamweight division tonight on WEC, how do you see that playing out?

I see myself taking these guys at 135 into deep waters. They have no chance with me. Not many fighters at 145 have a chance with me. I am strong at 135, I make the weight easy and nobody in the division has a technical edge on me at all. I will be the new champion in that division soon enough. That’s a promise.

Everyone wants to see you fight Miguel Torres for the WEC bantamweight title and a lot of people seem to count you out of this fight. Some say he will out strike you and some say he will sub you if it goes to the ground. What do you have to say about that?

For the record, every promoter in Chicagoland area has been trying to pit me and Miguel to fight main events for the past 7 years or so. We always denied. We knew that we would face eachother someday if meant to be and it should be on a big stage for all to see. As for people counting me out, thats just ridiculous thinking. They are obviously uneducated and should trace back our records and see who’s who. Aside from my official 31 wins i have another 20 or so that are not record from back in the day. Miguel can’t beat me at any part of the game and he knows it. If he thinks he can submit me because Urijah got me he is out of his mind (no disrepsect Miguel, but its true). Of course its a fight and anything can happen but Miguel will not be able to handle my power standing, he won’t be able to take me down and he isn’t powerful enough to hurt me. These are facts. These facts are key to our match-up. I have been training BJJ for 15 years non-stop and have been loyal to my instructor. I have not skipped a beat. I can’t believe anyone counts me out of that fight for any reason. But, all we can do is see for ourselves and let it rip. Miguel is a great champion and a good person, hopefully he holds that belt long enough for us to meet in the cage. I will take it from him.

You have arguably beaten Mike Brown and let Urijah Fabor slip through a situation where you had him in a position where you typically have a 99% finish ratio. Do you think you would ever go back to the featherweight division and how do you see the featherweight division a year from now?

I am sure of moving back to the featherweight division. But, not unless its for the right reason and the right time. I didn’t move down to 135 to avoid anybody in 145 or anything like that. I am moving down for a new pace, for a new start and one that can help me get a shot at a world title a little faster than waiting in line at 145. It’s a new challenege for me at 135 with lots of guys I never fought before. Featherweight division now has recently signed 2 guys that can easily challenge for the belt and both guys I had beat. Their only loss in 11 fights or so is to me. These guys are coming and mean business. Like I said, things have a way of balancing out if given the time. The muddy water settles if you let it. Thats what I intend to do. After it settles and I have made my mark at 135, if the deal is right and the Champ isn’t a good friend of mine or somthing like this, then I will gladly re-enter the division and muddy the waters up. Its my division that I have been Co-owning for the past decade.

Your past few fights you say you were not at 100% due to physical problems or business development issues. Could you explain this for us?

It’s actually very hard to explain, but i will try. Bottom line is I have been running my gym and growing my business since before I started fighting. On a much smaller scale then compared to now, but regardless it was done in that order. I never knew where this sport is was headed financially and still really don’t as far as retirement money goes so I always wanted business to come first. I need a place for me and my staff/fighters to work when our carreers are finished or during injury times/downtimes etc… Thats where my focus is and always has been when I am not training. Ask any business owner if any stress comes with their job and how tired they are after a day of sitting in an office. They will all answer the same. It’s exausting. I never used as an excuse because its been a part of my life since the beginning. I have however always wondered what would I have become as a fighter if I just trained and slept. Just busted my butt and recovered. Mentally, emotionally, physically. I never recover. It’s always somthing.

Now, add financial stress to that and its a whole different animal. I recently took on an investment of my new gym that has put me in a 3million dollar total investment. That’s a good chunk of change. That deal closed on May 22. I fought Mike Brown first of June 1st. The week of closing on the new gym was zero training for the most part. I was scrambling for the down payment, alligning everything for the SBA loan etc. It was definatly not what Mike Brown was doing that week. Again, no excuses because this is my life. I am learning lessons as i go in this life because I move fast. I never stop as I said. Not as a fighter, not in business. My life is a web of responsibility.

Another example, when I commenced training for Urijah Faber fight it all started good. 2 weeks non-stop. Then a blow in sparring. Within hours i was urinating blood. Thick, red blood. I had this before so i took a few days off. It got worse. A week in the doc said it would clear up. 2 weeks in it was getting worse. I had now about 5-6 weeks before fighting Urijah. I went in for outpatient surgery. I had to go under anestesia and they had to feed a video camera up inside me through my “you know what”. They found a slight rupture, but nothing requiring surgery. Just rest. I rested a couple more weeks. The blood disipated but never went away until a day or two before the fight. This is the Gods honest truth. I eventually had to make the decision if i was going to call the fight but i felt great. Just had blood pouring out in my urine and it was a little scary. 4-5 weeks of that starts to freak a guy out. Needless to say, i fought, i don’t back down and i don’t intend to stop anytime soon.

Since we are on this subject i would like people to know that when i fought Kid Yamamoto i was less than 6 weeks off surgery on my left knee. I had a bad tear in my miniscus from training. I rested 2 weeks then trained light for 4 weeks before the fight with arguably the toughest 145lb fighter in the world.

You have a lot of things finally starting to go your direction, a new multimillion dollar training facility, a fight team on the rise, and the reinvention of yourself at 135lbs. With your hands in so many opportunities outside the cage are you going to be able focus on getting that belt?

I am more focused than ever. I can’t go any bigger with my gym. I have my house and family taken care of. I have coaches and great students. Man, for the balance of my career it is time to disappear into the midst of the gym and be selfish for my training. Instead of scheduling training around office work and meetings with banks or insurance companies, I will have to set a day or two a month to hammer it all out. Believe me guys, I know what needs to be done and it is time i show the world once and for all who I am and what i stand for.

You say Ju Jitsu is your life, do you think you will ever compete in tournaments again?

Of course. Not sure when, but in between the rain drops. I did a black belt gi match earlier this year which was great. I won 6-4. When I retire from fighting I plan to compete in BJJ until my body doesn’t let me. My boys will hopefully be by my side.

If you could just draw up the next two years, what would it look like?

First 6 months earning my spot at a world title against Torres. Last year and a half will be defending it and hopfully making a huge positive impact on the WEC fans and the MMA community.

You’re a family guy and have a second child on the way, tell us how a week in the life at the Currans goes and how do you make time to unplug from work and training?

I don’t really unplug from work or training. For the most part I wake up at 7am, make way to the gym and begin my day. Around 9pm I head home. If my son is up late I see him before bed. If not I see him on weekends. I try to give my wife 1 or 2 days a week where I let her sleep in an extra hour or so and I play with my son Ty before work. She tries to visit me at the gym once a week too. He loves coming to “Dada Skool” to play on the mats etc. At home I am on the computer or phone by my side. She makes dinner based around my diet required at the time and I don’t even have time to cut the grass. My father-in-law helps with that thank God.<a href="http://www.suckerpunchent.com/wp-01/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/currantygi2.jpg

Sounds like you have a very tollerant wife? Anything you would like to say to her while we set you up with this softball?;)

Man, Sarah puts up with too much with me. She could have called it quits on me years ago but she loves me and believes in me. Without her support my life would be a disaster. Family, what little time i have with the, is my balance from the hectic whirlwind of my life. Even when I diet she is there to deal with me during my mood changes and my picky little ways. But, she is not a pushover. She is the boss of the house for the most part but she doesn’t abuse that role at all. We have a very healthy relationship.

Now we want to ask your opinion on some “What If’s” for the fun of it.

Silva, too sharp

3. BJ VS. Anderson Silva

6. Kid Yamamoto VS. Urijah
Kid, not sure how

7. BJ VS. Urijah

8. Rampage VS. Anderson Silva
Silva

9. Kid Yamamoto VS. BJ
BJ, size difference

10. Of course the likely hood of some of these is slim to none which one would you like to see most?
I would like to see Urijah vs Kid

11. Do you have a fantasy fight that we haven’t listed that you would like to see?
Varner vs Palaszewski

12. Any closing remarks for your fans and sponsors?
A special thanks to my boys at TapouT for all their support, Fairtex as well. Thanks to Suckerpunch for taking the time to ask my thoughts. A thanks to WEC and my management team across the board. A special thanks to my friends and family who always support me and for all the students of Team Curran for trusting me and our staff in our leadership.
