We don’t mean to sand bag so we are just going to tell you flat out… this is a bad man. Ururahy Rodrigues is 18-1 as a pro but if we fight him here in the states he shows up 3-1. Most of his fights were in Brazil and over half were at 170lbs. Now exclusively at 155lbs we are taking all comers. Based out of Atlanta Ururahy has quickly made himself a local favorite by blasting through his opponents. Atlanta fight promoter Andy Stroud says “I love having him fight in our shows, he is very exciting and fearless. The crowd loves watching him fight”.

We have been approached by SHINE fights about trying to set up a fight between Ururahy and a very feared opponent in ATT’s Johnathan Jorgel. SHINE’s matchmaker said they were having a hard time finding a match for Jorgel because he is supposed to be the top new prospect coming out of that camp. While at Shine we asked Ururahy if he would step up and fight Jorgel in the next Shine and his answer was, “I’ll fight him, I’ll fight him tonight if you want”.

Height: 6’ 0”
Weight: 185
Nickname: “Isn’t Igor good enough?”
MMA Record: 10-0 (5-0 Amateur, 5-0 Professional)

A perfect MMA record is hard to come by. Finishing all your opponents in the first round is even more difficult. Winning all ten fights, all in the first round, all by submission… now that’s impressive!

That is exactly what Igor Almeida has done.

Almeida was born in Boston, Massachusetts but raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was in Brazil, at the age of 14, that Almeida started his Jiu-Jitsu training under Sergio Souza and Brazilian Top Team co-founder Murilo Bustamante. In 2001, he had his first MMA fight in a local promotion; he was hooked.

Almeida moved to Palm Beach, Florida about seven years ago to continue his MMA training. He is a Brazilian Jiu -Jitsu Black Belt under Eduardo Brigadeiro. While all of his wins have come by submission, don’t underestimate his striking. “I’ve been working really hard on my stand-up these last few years,” Almeida said.

Almeida currently splits his training between three different gyms. His Jiu-Jitsu is with Brigadeiro at BBJJ in Palm Beach. He trains his boxing at Palm Beach Boxing with Lou Martinez, and his Muay Thai at Legacy Martial Arts with Sensei Cameron. Almeida is a BJJ instructor at these gyms, as well.

With all of his fights ending in the first round, some may question whether Almeida has the conditioning to go a full fight. Not a problem he says. “I work with Wes Wright, my strength and conditioning coach. We have a real unorthodox training program based on Cross Fit. I pull sleds, flip tires, carry logs. It’s very effective”.

With such an impressive record, it is getting harder for Almeida to find a willing opponent. His next fight is in the XFO this August, but no one has stepped up to challenge him yet. I asked Almeida, if you could fight anyone, in any promotion, who would you choose? “I’d like to fight David Loiseau. I just think that would be a good match”.

Almeida tried out for this season’s “The Ultimate Fighter”. As part of the screening process the fighters are paired up by a lottery. To test their ground skills they are given one minute to grapple against their opponent. There aren’t a lot of submissions in this minute. Almeida, however, submitted his opponent five times in 60 seconds!

“Joe Silva was standing right next to me during my bout. He shook my hand after and asked if I would make the weight. I thought for sure I would make the show”. He didn’t.

“Maybe if I wore a costume or had pink hair” Almeida joked. “But I’m sure Joe Silva remembers me”.

Expect big things from Almeida and, hey Joe Silva, don’t forget Igor!

(Almeida wanted to thank his coaches and sponsors, Black I Sportswear and Roxy’s Pub).

People think it’s all about the money and that the athlete doesn’t really care who sponsors them as long as they get paid… Well that’s not the case with Jens Pulver. Yes he is paid to promote the Activision game COD4, but in no way was he supposed to decorate his own vehicle with the brand! This is happens when there is a perfect marriage between athlete and sponsor.

SuckerPunch and Jens has been working with the folks at Activision now for his past two fights and has been playing the COD game since the first version came out. The bottom line, Jens is professional fighter and pretty much a professional gamer. Jens is so passionate about this game that he claims it helps him stay grounded and focused during the tough months while training for a fight.

Keep your eyes open because COD5 is around the corner!

On Saturday July 12th Dwayne “Diesel” Shelton won a convincing battle against Team Kurt Pellagrino fighter Kevin Roddy. Dwayne was simply too strong for Roddy as he landed heavy shots and reversed take down attempts and nearly submitted Roddy at the end of the 3rd round. It was a convincing win amongst some very controversial judging to say the least. One Judge had it scored 30-27 for Roddy which only tells us he was either not paying attention to the fight or he was leaning for the hometown favorite. This was on the heels of a VERY controversial decision against LeVon Maynard. Dwayne is now on a win streak having fought two tough opponents in 2 weeks and is eager to keep it going. Keep an eye on Dwayne as he is refocused and a very exciting fighter to watch!

This month we are putting the spotlight on Anthony “Antmo” Morrison.

Q. Anthony how did you get into this sport?
A. I got into this the same way Joe Silva did… WWF wrestling. I was a huge fan, my life was wrestling, comics and video games. When I saw MMA for the first time i was like maaaan and this aint fake! hahaha! Since then I have just studied and watched anything and everything I could get my hands on.

Q. That leads us to the next question. We have been told you are a walking encyclopedia for MMA, meaning you can recite the fight card for nearly every event?!?
A. Haha, well i don’t know about that but yeh i get made fun of by my teammates for being “The Rain Man” of MMA cuz i can remember every event, event name and fight that i have ever watched… i just happened to have watched them all! lol! One of the coolest moments I had was just talking fights with Joe Silva when he came to visit our school… we talked for a good bit and I think i surprised him with my knowledge of the sport… that’s when i found out he was a wrestling fan! Joe is a cool cat.

Q. What are some of your interests, or what do you do in your spare time?
A. I love Gears of War man! I am a video game junkie! if I am not playing my games I am watching as much fight footage as I can. I also write a lot… I have boxes of note books that I have written in over the years. I am a deep thinker so I really like to get into my journals, it helps me keep things in perspective… I know my boys back home are gonna read this and be like, “you sissy!” lol. it’s all good… but I am what I am and I do what I do… I write, thats right i said it! I write! lol!

Q. Tell us a little about your training, we know you have trained with some good people but for the most part your early training was pretty much on your own?
A. Yeh i have been to many camps and even trained with Dan Severn but for the most part I was brought in as a sparring partner for other fighters on their teams. I never really had a home to train at until I moved to Richmond, VA to be a part of Team Combat.

Q. Why did you choose Richmond, VA and Team Combat to be your home?
A. I had fought on a few cards down there and saw that they had some tough guys on their team. Brian Crenshaw invited me down to train and I never really thought about moving down full time but I could tell right away when I worked with those guys that I had holes in my game that needed work. I bounced back and forth from Philly to VA every now and then for about a year and tried to stay sharp training on my own out of my grand mama’s basement but I knew i could never reach that next level unless I moved.

Q. So what made you move?
A. I made some bad fight choices because i needed money and lost a dumb fight in Atlantic City that i took on 24 hours notice… that loss opened my eyes that if I wanted to make a go at this as a career I had to make some changes. I have sacrificed more than you know to be in this sport.

Q. Can you tell us a bit about those sacrifices?
A. Yeh but don’t you try and make me cry! don’t do it! lol. I realized that most of my friends are either dead, in jail or hangin on the same street corner they have been for years. I have a daughter that I love dearly and I just have to make good for her. I was going nowhere by staying in Philly but i couldn’t afford to move with my daughter. I have had the odd jobs here and there but in that environment it is easy to get sucked into doing bad things for money. I would be no good to my girl if I ended up in jail or dead. I had to weigh what is best for her and I long term so i scraped together enough money for a one way bus ticket, packed my bags and told my daughter I am going to become a world champion. I slept on couches and picked up odd jobs in VA so I could be a part of this team and I have not lost since. I talk to my girl everyday and I get emotional if I think about her… but she is proud of her daddy and with the help of some of my sponsors I have been able to go home and visit her a few times in the past several months.

Q. Wow, so you basically recognized a bad situation that you felt would not get better, and made a very aggressive move to change your future?
A. I guess you could say that… To this day I’m torn about it because I miss my little girl so much… but I know that i had no future with her if I stayed there. I just wish I could have her here with me but that is what I am working at. It keeps me motivated to work hard, Brian Butler told me that I am here for one reason only and that is to train and become the best I can be… Every minute I train I am working to get a life for me and my little girl, If I get lazy and slack for a bit Brian is the first to remind me that that is a wasted time away from my daughter… I aint wasting no time! I love the town I am in and I love my teammates on Team Combat and on SuckerPunch. Good things are starting to happen for me.

Q. Anyone you want to thank?
A.Yes I would like to send a shout out to my daughter Kamya! My mom, grandma, Trisha, and my brother darryl for looking after Kamya.

Stephen, Briheem, Ronnell, and Man Man, for always being there.

To Kru Brian Crenshaw, my teamates at Team Combat, Brian Butler, Max C., my brothers from another Bartimus and Big Frog, and all my teammates at SuckerPunch Entertainment! SuckerPunch is about to take over!

R.I.P. to my friends Ty and Gees, I will never forget you guys.

This month we are putting the spotlight on an relatively unknown fighter. His name is Francois Ambang. Little was known about him when he showed up on the doorstep of Combat Sports Center in Richmond, VA (Amir Sadollah’s home school). He came with a translator because he spoke no english. The translator said Francois was from Cameroon, he was a kick boxer, spoke french and wanted to be on the fight team. Kru Brian Crenshaw asked him to gear up and move around with some of the current team members to see what level he was at. It wasn’t more than 30 seconds into it before Kru Crenshaw knew something special just walked in the door. This kid was absolutely explosive! watching his speed, power and technique was was like watching a thorough bred horse burst out of the gates.

Because of the language barrier, Francois came across as quiet and serious. Back that up with a very intimidating appearance and an inability to actually understand the words, “light sparring today”, and you can guess not many people liked him at first. Francois also new nothing about any of the fighters on the team, therefore he was never intimidated by any of them. In fact when Amir Sadollah was asked who his toughest sparring partner was, in an interview with 411mania.com, he simply answered, “Francois”… and this was after the taping of TUF7!

Francois has been with Team Combat now for almost 1 year, and in that period of time he has learned english and has earned the respect and friendship of all his teammates. To hear him laughing and joking around now you can tell that he is a good natured guy.

The million dollar question is, should SuckerPunch send Francois to the TUF 9 tryouts? He has little experience in MMA but his athleticism gives anyone fits on the ground and his striking is world class. It may be too soon, but he is exciting to watch… and you never know. Carpe diem?
