It has been a long run for WEC Contender Jeff “Big Frog” Curran, facing easily the toughest 5 fight stretch in the history of MMA for any fighter. Curran is coming off what most in the sport consider one of the worse judging moments in 2009, falling to a split decision to contender Takeya Mizugaki at WEC 42.
Walking to cage at WEC42
The Big Frog opened everyone watching the fights eyes with his Jiu-Jitsu display as he dismantled his opponent from his back, using what some are considering to be the best Guard in the sport. “Jiu-Jitsu is my life. I live it and breathe it everyday and i was disgusted with the decision at my last fight” says Curran when asked about his most recent fight. Not looking to waste anytime after his last fight, Curran began thinking of ways to challenge himself as his fate is decided by the WEC management over the next month.

Curran, also known for his great Jiu-Jitsu credentials over the years has looked down the path of getting back to his roots after suffering the heartbreaking decision at WEC 42. “Man, I just felt great and know I won. I am happy with how I fought and have no real regrets. Its time I get submerged into the grappling world again and hone my craft while I await WEC’s decision” Curran told us.
Coaches Padro Suaer and Dr. Doug Mango discuss ideas about Currans training session.
After his loss to Mizugaki, Jeff received his 2nd Degree on his Black Belt from his Master Pedro Sauer and he went right back to the mat to ponder what’s next. “Abu Dhabi popped into my head right away. I mean, I always wanted to compete in the trials but it never worked with my fight schedule. I have some time now so i made some calls.” After calling Pedro Sauer and Marcelo Garcia looking for a direct line to see about qualifying for ADCC, he was formally invited within 24 hrs. “I think it was a God send personally. I am coming off this good performance in the WEC, i have people like Pedro Sauer and Marcelo Garcia vouching for me so it all worked out”. On Sept 23rd, the Big Frog hops on a flight to Barcelona, Spain to compete in “Abu Dhabi”, the most prestigious grappling tournament on the planet. A tournament that features 16 of the worlds best grapplers in each of the 5 respected weight classes. What makes the Abu Dhabi Championships so special is that all competitors must receive an invite from the Sheikh Tahnoon of Abu Dhabi and United Arabic Emirates or win a series of Regional Qualifiers from around the Globe.

For the first time in the Big Frog’s life he is going to train for a grappling tournament rather than just walk on like he has over the course of his career. “I just train everyday so when tournaments come up and I decide I want to compete I just show up. I never just trained my butt off to win it. This time is going to be different. I am really excited to train hard like i do for MMA for ADCC. Its all about stepping up for me and challenging myself” added Curran. So make no mistake about it, Big Frog has big plans and won’t be slowing down for anyone.
The tournament is set to begin September 26th with the finals on Sept 27th and is taking place in Barcelona, Spain. For more information on ADCC 2009, please visit www.adccbarcelona.com and visit www.adcombat.com for other news in and around the sport.
