I REALLY hope its not Jens “last March”. I think I would actually cry :’( My Birthday is on March 10th…so it would be a nice gift for him to WIN. Oh…and for the record, there are plenty of Pulver fans who will NEVER (pardon the deliberate pun) give up on him, even if he were to lose. Trust me when I say in truth, the name Jens Pulver is only considered with Greatness…I have not heard anyone online, in four years outside of keyboard warriors who trash eveyone meaninglessly for the sake of it (note, even they dont really mean what they say) ever say bad things about Jens. Let us be absolutely clear right now, at this point, if Jens were to vanish tommorow he has Already achieved a point where his family name (as far as the fight fans are concerned) is associated with Greatness…he doesnt need to proove himself, he doesnt need to validate his history, he doesnt need to appease the haters with an answer. People consider him a legend already. Any further accolades are icing on a cake already well and truely baked. He needs to understand this. He needs to know that we still love him, and will continue to do so whatever happens. He needs to take seriously the fact that he is an inspiration to many because of the background he came out of, its not just that he made it to some golden belt, its that he overcame a deficiet to even qualify, and there are many people who feel empowered by his story, who can empathise perhaps with different parts of what it is to heal oneself from a state of brokeness that wasnt your fault.
In short its a recognised and accepted fact that Jens Pulver is so much more then a successful fighter.
I just watched a short film by Gregory Bayne and in it Jens makes mention that his family never gave up on him but that maybe his fans had and I couldn’t let that statement stand. I’ve never really sent this kind of message before and I feel as if I am struggling with it already but here goes nonetheless:
Jens,
Your fans (at least this one) have been with you from day one and I have never once and will never give up on you. I don’t care if you lose 10 fights or 20 fights in a row, I will be rooting for you when that next fight comes around. This sport is about so much more than competition, it is about human beings struggling to overcome hurdles whether they be mental or physical. Happy, sad, angry, broken, tired, proud…Jens Pulver has been one of the best representations of that humanity and that struggle to do better, to be better. Sappy as this may sound Jens, your fans love you and all fans of this sport respect and admire you, not just for what you have done but for who you are. This world we live in has a lot of Brock Lesnars, it’s a shame there aren’t a few more Jens Pulvers.
In closing I would like to say that if I have to send this letter 100 times to a hundred different email addresses I will do so in the hopes that you will get this letter. I may never be a fighter but that is in truth the least you have done to inspire me. I’ve written this letter to a man who loves his family more than anything, a man who can be as fragile as he can charismatic. That is what you do to inspire the world Jens, and those of us that see it, will follow you to hell and back. When others don’t believe, we always will. We are with you Jens, that much you can count on.
Thank you to SuckerPunchEnt.com for allowing me an avenue for expressing the above statement. If there is a way you can make sure Jens sees it…all the better.
