They don’t call him “Showtime” for nothing… Anthony Pettis has quickly become the buzz of the lightweight division in the WEC because of his dramatic finishes and flashy techniques that quite honestly not many people can pull off or even have the guts to try. His next fight will be the co-main event in the WEC against another top contender in the lightweight division, Shane Roller. The winner of this fight will more than likely get a shot at the 155lb belt currently held by Ben “Smooth” Henderson, so all eyes will be on this highly anticipated bout. “I have been training harder than ever in this camp and I am comfortable where ever this fight goes” said Pettis, “Everyone says I need to worry about his wrestling but I think he has a few more things to worry about than me, I feel I have a more complete game and I plan on showing it on the 18th.”

Roller is a division 1, all american wrestler from Oklahoma State and brings an 8-2 record into the cage on the 18th with his only loss in the WEC coming at the hands of the current champion Ben Henderson. The media says this is a classic match up of a world class wrestler going up against a world class striker, however Pettis is much much more than a striker… Very slick off his back and extremely athletic Pettis brings a complete game to the cage. “I’m not looking past Roller but I do have my eyes on the belt”, Pettis says, “I know I have what it takes to be a World Champion for the WEC and I am honored that they have given me the road to travel to get there.”

Pettis has everything it takes to carry the torch for the sport and the WEC, charismatic, good looking, and brings the crowd to their feet every time which is why MTV picked him to be a feature on there documentary series which will debut in September. All things seem to be moving in the right direction for Pettis now and “Showtime” should feel right at home with the spotlight on him on August 18th.

Matt Fiordirosa became known to the MMA world when america saw him and his ear to ear smile on the Tapout reality show on Versus. To date the top rated episode of that series was the one where the late Charles “Mask” Lewis repeatedly bellowed out “Sunshine Sunshine!”. Not long after the taping of the show Sunshine took a break from fighting to focus on school, “I just wanted to have a fall back in case something happened with fighting” Matt told us, “You never know how things will go in this sport, but I have been staying in shape and training harder than ever”. Sunshine trains alongside WEC fighters Bart Palaszewski and Mackens Semerzier, Bellator Lightweight tourney champion Pat Curran, and MMA Pioneer Jeff Curran.

Sunshine will be making his return against Bobby Reardanz at the XFO on August 14th. With an impressive 11-1-0 record Sunshine’s only loss was a decision to Wagnney Fabiano at the beginning of his fight career. Since then he has racked up a 10 fight win streak which includes a win over former WEC World Champion Chase Beebe. “I have always said, since the day i met him, that this kid was going to be a superstar”, said Jeff Curran, “I am so excited as his coach and as his friend and fan to see him fight again.” SuckerPunch is proud to have Matt on board and we are looking forward to a the bright return of this young star. Abongo returns to the Strikeforce cage on July 23 at the Comcast Arena in Everett, WA where he plans to continue his climb in the light heavyweight division against veteran brawler Mike Kyle (12-7-1).

Humphrey first made a name for himself when he won the heavyweight division as a part of Lil John’s team on “The Iron Ring”, a reality based fight show on the BET network. Humphrey boasts a 7-1-0 record with all of his wins ending in the first round via KO or TKO with the exception of his last fight against George Bush back in March which was a first round submission. “I have a ground game” Abongo told us, “I train my ground with Roberto Traven and I can take the fight anywhere it needs to go, I just happen to usually win by strikes”. Abongo’s only loss came against Brett Rogers when he was still fighting as a heavyweight. Since the Rogers fight, Abongo has dropped back to his natural weight division at light heavy and is back on the winning track. “This is going to be a good fight. Kyle is a tough guy and likes to stand so I am looking to put on a good show and make my way out of the Challenger Series and onto the main Strikeforce card.”

Thursday marks the end of the second season of Bellator Fighting Championships. 2 of SuckerPunch’s rising stars stepped in and delivered big for the promotion starting with Pat Curran, who by winning the lightweight tournament became arguably the biggest Cinderella story in MMA for 2010. Brent Weedman however has been a little more under the radar but should not go unnoticed. Brent is 15-5-0 a prospect with KO power in his hands and feet, powerful wrestling and slick BJJ. With his first win in the Bellator promotion over Rudy Bears (11-5-0), Brent proved himself a candidate for the next welterweight tourney. A win in the season finale would all but secure that spot. “It’s not a matter of if he wins, it’s a matter of when he wins”, said head coach Eric Haycraft. Brent will face John Troyer (10-4-0) in what is expected to be a hometown war between 2 of Louisville’s best welterweights.

On June 12th Pat “HD” Barry will face one of the most dangerous men in the history of fighting when he faces Mirko Cro Cop in UFC 115’s Co-Main Event. This fight has “war” written all over it and Barry is ready to bring the fight to CroCop. “When I first heard I was gonna fight CroCop I was so excited”, said Barry, “I mean come on that’s CroCop and I am one of his biggest fans!” Don’t let the star struck Barry fool you though, he is going for the win and feels he will win big. “I know I he has a big left kick but my striking doesn’t suck” said Barry, “He is CroCop but I am Pat Barry!”

With all this being said what we are looking at is a style match up that puts 2 very powerful strikers against each other. CroCop has gone on record and said, “right kick=hospital, left kick=cemetery”, which for all intensive purposes is pretty accurate. However what he faces in Pat Barry is right kick=cemetery, left kick=cemetery and for what its worth Barry’s hands can put you there as well. “I am looking to knock limbs off”, Barry told reporters, “I feel I can bring what he brings to the table and then some”.

While Liddell and Franklin headline this card but this seems to be the fight everyone wants to see. “Pat was ready to fight CroCop on a weeks notice in Australia but because of customs, visa’s and other paper work it wasn’t able to happen”, said Coach Duke Roufus, “now with a full camp behind him we are supremely confident that Pat will go and take care of business in Vancouver”.

On June 10th Pat Curran will face submission wizard Toby Imada in the Bellator lightweight tournament finale. Cousin to MMA superstar Jeff Curran, Pat looks to cement his own legacy by winning the Bellator lightweight tourney.

Fighting above his normal weight class of 145lbs and entering a very stacked 155lb tournament, Pat was not expected to make it out of the first round. Heavily favored Mike Ricci entered the cage following a long video montage about his accolades as GSP’s training partner and hyped as “the next big thing at 155lbs”, while Pat modestly stepped into cage the without so much more than some last minute entrance music. “Pat is a composed kid and does not buy into the hype” said cousin and mentor Jeff Curran, “He does not get nervous to fight and he is ready to give a 100% everytime”. Pat shocked the MMA world with a crushing KO over Ricci that has now made it’s way into the regular rotation of the Bellator highlight real.

Advancing to the semi final round Pat would draw one of the greatest 155lb fighters in the world in Roger Huerta. “This is the fight I wanted next”, said Pat, “I felt very confident with the win over Ricci and just felt that my style would match well and cause problems for Huerta”. The fight with Huerta was a close fight but Pat was able to win a unanimous decision by controlling the pace and landing the more damaging shots. “When Pat landed that head kick early in the first round we saw Roger’s entire demeanor change, it was like he realized that this was going to be a fight” said striking coach Doug Mango.

Now one win away from winning the tournament and what has to be one of the best “Cinderella” stories in the sport since Amir Sadollah tore through the TUF house in season 7, Pat has his eyes set on Imada. “I feel ready for this fight”, Curran said, “Mackens Semerzier, Junior Assuncao, Bart Palaszewski and of course my cousin Jeff all were a part of this camp and I couldn’t be more prepared for this fight”.

Bellator Fighting Championships founder and CEO Bjorn Rebney announced today that Roger Huerta will face rising star Pat Curran in the semi final round of the lightweight tournament. “This is the match we wanted”, said SuckerPunch president Brian Butler, “Pat is the dark horse in this tournament and we knew if we got through the “GSP protege” that Huerta would be the ideal match we wanted”.

Currans KO over Ricci became the latest Youtube moment for Bellator who seems to continue to get amazing highlights out of the matches they put together. In just five days, the clip has already been viewed online more than 66,000 times.

With the chips stacked against him and fighting in this tourney outside his natural weight class of 145lbs, Curran does not feel the pressure that one might expect. “I knew if I got passed Ricci that there would be a chance that I could face Roger and now that it is official, I couldn’t be happier”, said Curran, “I can beat Roger, I know I can”. As for fighting out of his weight class Curran told us, “I feel really strong at 155lbs and I bulked up pretty fast, I also like the fact that it adds to me being the underdog because that just puts more pressure on my opponents”.

The fight will take place on May 6th at the Wang Theatre in Boston.
