CURRAN, MAYNARD & WYMAN AT EFC4
June 24th, 2009 | Published in FIGHTER NEWS | 29 Comments
Maynard vs. Cofer
ROUND 1: Maynard and Cofer tap gloves and begin circling the cage. None of the fighters seem to want to initiate the first attack. Maynard seems to expect Cofer to shoot but instead Cofer throws a spinning kick that misses its mark. Maynard answers with some inside leg kicks and a Head kick that is blocked but gets the attention of the 6’2″ Cofer. The crowd is getting restless as the fighters continue to size each other up.
Maynard initiates some punches and opens up a cut on Cofer as he dives in for a single leg almost getting Maynard down. Cofer keeps the pressure on and ties Maynard up against the cage but Maynard is able to break free as the round comes to a close.
ROUND 2: The fighters again circle the cage and Cofer goes quickly to try take Maynard down but ends up getting reversed as Maynard fights to full mount. Maynard starts raining down some punches and gets Cofer to give up his back. Maynard quickly capitalizes and sinks a very quick choke forcing Cofer to tap.
Wyman vs. Medrano
ROUND 1: The tension could be felt throughout the arena as this one kicked off. Both fighters seemed eager to get this on going as they came out swinging for the fences. Wyman landed some good body kicks as Medrano kept coming forward. Medrano shoots in and is able to take Wyman down but Wyman is able to scramble back to his feet. As he is coming up Medrano unloads a viscous punch that take Wyman off his feet and down in the corner of the cage. Medrano smells a finish and jumps on the chance but Wyman somehow gets up and begins firing back punches and kicks that back Medrano off. This fight is insane! Wyman is able to get control of the stand up again and Medrano again presses forward for a take down. Wyman is not able to stop Medrano from taking him down and the first round closes with Medrano on top but this is shaping up to be a war!
ROUND 2: Wyman again initiates with kicks and punches in bunches but Medrano is able to weather the storm and get a takedown and work some ground and pound. Not a whole lot of damage being done but none the less he is controlling the ground at the moment. Wyman is able to tie Medrano up and the ref stand them back up. Again these two go at it just trying to take each others heads off. Wyman is getting the better of the stand up every time and it is starting to show on Medrano’s face. There is no quit in Medrano though and he continues to use his takedowns to score points. Medrano is connecting on some punches from inside Wyman’s guard but not really putting Wyman in to much trouble. Wyman goes for a triangle attempt but Medrano is able to posture out. Not much action on the ground and the ref again stands them up. The round ends with the two fighters throwing down.
ROUND 3: Both fighters seem to be a bit gassed at this point but Wyman again opens with some nasty body kicks and a head kick that back Medrano up. Medrano shoots in and takes Wyamn down this time able to secure side mount and even getting to full mount. Before he is able to capitalize on his position Wyman is able to use the fence to flip Medrano and gain top positon. The fighters end up getting back to their feet where once again the exchange blows. Medrano again shoots and take phil down. This time it looks like Wyman allows Medrano to get full mount and imediatly does the exact same move flipping Medrano and getting back to his feet. Both fighters are diggin deep at this point and the crowed is into this fight! Closing seconds of the round has Wyman and Medrano swinging on each other until the bell sounds! Both fighters raise their hands and the crowd is on their feet.
This was easily the fight of the night but Medrano got the decision in this war.
Curran vs Diaz
ROUND 1: Diaz and Curran quickly make their way to the center of the cage to establish their ground. Diaz opens with a punch that wakes Curran up. Curran lands some leg kicks as Diaz pushes in and tries to tie Curran up on the fence. Curran is creating space and throwing solid knees each time he makes an opening. Diaz seems to be content holding Curran against the cage. Curran listening to every word his corner is saying gets the under hooks and turns Diaz’s back to the cage and immediately starts throwing knees and elbows. Diaz is able to turn Curran back to the cage but does not press the action. Curran is the one pressing the action regardless if his back is on the cage or not. Not shaping up to be an exciting fight but Curran is doing all he can to make this a fight! Diaz seems to just be trying to survive by tying young Curran up on the cage. Daiz goes for a couple unsuccessful takedown attempts from this position but Curran shows tremendous balance and again flips Diaz around and starts throwing knees. The round close with Daiz holding Curran against the cage.
ROUND 2: Curran comes out more aggressive with his hands and flicks a jab followed by an overhand right that cracks Diaz square in the face. Diaz wants none of it and again shoots in to press Curran against the cage. Curran fights off the cage with several hard knees and elbows then turns Diaz’s back to the cage. The two go back and forth like this for the remainder of the round but Curran stays busy with knees and elbows cutting Diaz open above and below his right eye.
ROUND 3: More of the same with Curran seeming to be the one pressing the action and Diaz trying only to tie Curran up on the cage wall. Diaz tries unsuccessfully to take Curran down only to eat more knees and elbows from the frustrated Curran. The closing minute of the round has Currans cousin, Jeff Curran, yelling “finish strong cuz! one minute for the rest of your life!” Listening to every word young Curran is gets and opening and ends with a flurry that has him landing a flying knee and a barrage of punches and kicks.
Judges award a split decision to Diaz. The majority of the fans in attendance and even some officials were stunned by this call.
Aside from the questionable judging EFC 4 was a great event and we look forward to having our fighters with this promotion again.

On June 27th at 7 p.m., the Elite Fighting Challenge unleashes the very first Professional Mixed Martial Arts Event to The Norfolk Scope. Featuring 13 professional and amateur MMA bouts presented by Proximo Entertainment, EFC 4 brings together an exciting and skilled group of fighters from some of the best MMA fight teams across the country for the first time in Hampton Roads.
During this special Military Appreciation event, EFC 4 will showcase two main events featuring stars from The Ultimate Fighter, Season 8 and TapouT, Season 2- with a total of 13 explosive fights in one night. This promises to bring some of the most intense and highly anticipated MMA action the Hampton Roads area has ever seen!
The featured Professional Co-Main events of the evening matches Patrick Curran (8-1 Pro) versus Charles Diaz (17-4 Pro, King of the Cage Vet). Sharing top billing for the night is Staff Sergeant, Phillip “The Wicked” Wyman (6-2 Pro, WCA and WEC vet) battling bitter rival Team Rhino fighter Mike Medrano (6-2)
Levon Maynard (7-3, From Norfolk) versus 6’2” wrestling and striking powerhouse Marc Cofer (5-3, WCA Veteran)
“There’s a lot of twists to this event that make this a must see show” said SuckerPunch president Brian Butler. “Mike Medrano has a very controversial win over our man Levon so we pushed hard for a rematch, but Medrano has made it pretty clear he didn’t want to do it… Wyman on the other hand has one of his only two losses to now SP teammate Levon Maynard… This was early in their careers before either were signed to Suckerpunch, so I thought it would be a good fight for Wyman to have a shot at an opponent that has a win over Levon” said Butler. Wyman tells us, “I am excited about this fight because Levon and I are never gonna fight again, we are just too close of friends now, so in a way this fight gives me a chance to kinda redeem a loss and step up and get one back for my brother Levon”.
In the main event Patrick “Paddy Mike” Curran faces TUF8 veteran Charles Diaz. Curran has been on a tear as of late and has accumulated an impressive record of 7-1 under the guidance of WEC superstar and cousin, Jeff “Big Frog” Curran. Pat told us, “I really look forward to having a war against Diaz. He is experienced and its exactly what me and my team want for me right now. A win over him could open the eyes of the WEC.”
Cousin Jeff tells us, “I am so proud of my cousin. I told him he has to work full-time and make a living during the early years of his career and now he is doing great with his new HVAC job. One of our good friends hired him and he is a full-time Heating and Air guy now for Schwartz and Co.. He works all day, trains at night. Just like i did. The sky is the limit for him!” Jeff goes on to say, “He was a force at 155, now…at 145, these guys are in trouble. He is dangerous from the top.”

I have been following all the Sucker Punch guys on this site for a while now and will be there cheering for you guys! My problem im having is who’s code to use when i buy my ticket?? I like both guys!
Do you guys feel more pressure fighting at home or more excitement?
May 21st, 2009at 7:54 am(#)
This is great! The added pressure to perform is gonna drive me even harder. I have to get a “W” and avenge Levons loss to Medrano. Even though we know who really won that fight. It is true Levon and I are tight. Even if he and I make it to one of the big shows it would be hard to square off. But who knows if the price is right!;) We would have to talk mad trash about each other. Thanks for all the support and I hope to see all the Sucker punch fans in full force. I will check back and let you all know how the training is going soon. Stand by for Wicked T-shirts to be coming soon from KOBC.
BE WICKED!!!

Look out Norfolk! This fight card is gonna blow the lens out the Scope! I wanna see Phil and Levon crackin skulls. I think I fought on the same card as you Levon’ back in the day at a Combat Sports Challenge in Richmond. Sound familiar?

My best wishes to the rest of the Sucker Punch fighters! Wish I didn’t have to miss the show. It is going to be awesome.

Aloha Wicked Wy-Man, I never considered watching until I met you guys, well, and of course, this is the FAV of my youngest daughter, Kelly. It always helps me to have a friend in a sport to cheer on before I become fully interested, so let me know how we can tune in, because we are there!!! Actually, MMA has become THE SPORT in the household when surf season is over. So, when are you guys “bringing it” to Honolulu?
May 31st, 2009at 9:05 pm(#)
Hey Phillip – Can’t wait to see another victory for you on the June 27th fight!! If it was anything like the fight in Sarasota you won’t even have to break a sweat! Good Luck and I hope I can make it to see it live!!

Hey Phil,
Looking forward to seeing you, Mrs Wicked and Caleb in a few days. Also looking forward to meeting your fellow fighters like Levon. (Is he really a push over like you told me he is??) ;-P
Your preparation for this fight started years ago when you walked into my dojo as a geeky high school kid.
A lot has changed since then. Your life experiences and your training to date has made you a formidable opponent!!
C you soon,

Awesome event. Fights were great. Diaz fight…ok. Wyman vs Medrano —WHAT?!!!! — fight of the night, mos def. That Medrano is a fucking savage. No controvesy there, seen the manyard fight on youtube…why exactly is it so controversial? Medrano never passed his guard & Manyard is a beast, but it was pretty clear Medrano got the W. When is the next EFC event?
June 29th, 2009at 8:00 pm(#)
As one of the only fans that traveled for Mike Medrano’s fight I have to say that the FANS in Norfolk were nothing but HIGH CLASS!!! I have been to many fights in AC including the Medrano/Maynard and this event was great. Had a blast…keep up the hard work.

Wooohoooo! Levon WON!!
Sounds like Wyman only lost because of the other guys scores with take-downs :’( A bummer…but nothing a good sprawl wouldnt fix for next time
We still love you anyway
I think I forgot Curran was fighting…ooops…sorry :$

EFC was overall an awesome event. I was glad to be there with Levon as he won his fight…eventhough i feel he should have killed that boy in the first minute
and he held back…but ..what can we do. lol
patrick’s fight was a complete joke from the judges. why a judge thinks that pinning pat to the fence to avoid the stand-up game and not able to take pat down. eating elbows and knees etc.. in the process gets him a win its just shitty. REMATCH!!!
Sorry Phil, didn’t see your fight bro..was getting patrick ready. can’t wait. heard it was awesome.
thanks to EFC and SP for all the organizatioin and getting 3 SP guys on the card.
July 2nd, 2009at 6:00 am(#)
It was a well earned win for Mike. He worked hard for it. Still a decision is a a Judges opinion!
I want a rematch!!!! I asked Mike after the fight and he said we can do it again some day in the UFC! No worries Mike….I will see you in the square circle! He is a class act and I am proud to say a new friend. It was WAR!!! I will have to work on some stuff but overall in my mind there was no deffinate stoppage there, I will keep my head up and chin down and train harder. You will see another win from me soon. LEVON! your my boy, great job brother…..Pat man you need a rematch. Thanks Jeff for all the support brother and KOBC thanks for the “fresh” walk out T!
Brian get your butt back to work and find me another fight!!!!
