When we met Barry we had already been told by his coach Duke Roufus that Barry was the real deal. Coming out of the ranks of K-1, Duke had mentioned that Barry was a freak of an athlete with kicks that could crumble any man. The buzz about Barry is that he could be the best pure striker in the heavyweight division.

During a photo shoot we asked Barry to give us some action shots and we were blown away when this 240lb mass of muscle did one of the most graceful backflips we had ever seen. What was really amazing was he landed without making a noise, and he landed in the same spot he took off from. We realize this doesn’t say much for his fight game, but it does show that this is a very athletic heavyweight contender and we are confident he will make waves in that division.

Barry is scheduled to make his debut in the UFC on December 27th against Dan Evensen.

We sat down with Pat and asked him to answer a few questions and here is what he had to say:

1. WHEN DID YOU START TRAINING IN MARTIAL ARTS?

I STARTED TRAINING WHEN I WAS 23. BUT I’VE BEEN SECRETLY INTO MARTIAL ARTS MY ENTIRE LIFE, WITH HEROES LIKE VAN DAMME AND THE NINJA TURTLES! AND NO MATTER WHAT I GOT MY HANDS DIRTY WITH, I WASN’T GOING TO SETTLE FOR BEING LESS THAN THE ABSOLUTE BEST. AND JUST AS I AM NOW, I’VE ALWAYS BEEN READY AND WILLING TO FIGHT MY WAY TO THE TOP, BE IT METAPHORICALLY OR LITERALY. THERE’S NO AVOIDANCE OF GREATNESS WHEN ITS DESTINED.

2. HOW DO YOU SEE YOURSELF STACK UP AGAINST THE TOP GUYS IN THE UFC?

I DEFINITELY HAVE SOMETHING TO OFFER. A DIFFERENT STYLE, LOOK AND ABILITY. SOMETHING NEW! THERE’S NOT ENOUGH ROOM FOR EVERY ONE AT THE TOP, THOUGH. IF I’M BEING MEASURED UP WITH THOSE CHOSEN FEW, THEN SOMEONE MUST KNOW I’M COMING! SOMEONE’S ANXIOUS AND / OR WORRIED. I’M GOING TO EMPTY OUT ALL THOSE “TOP” SPOTS. GIMMEE!

3. YOU HAVE YOUR FIRST FIGHT INNTHE UFC ON DEC 27th AGAINST DAN EVENSON, HOW DO YOU SEE THAT GOING?

I’M NOT A WRESTLER OR A GRAPPLER. I’M A DEVASTATING STRIKER! MY PUNCHES FEEL LIKE KICKS. MY KICKS END CAREERS! I INFLICT MAJOR DAMAGE AND WILL GIVE YOU NIGHTMARES. AND IT’S A FIGHT SHOW, SO IM GONNA SHOW THE FANS SOMETHING THEY HAVEN’T SEEN IN THE HEAVY WEIGHT DIVISION IN A LONG TIME! ‘CAUSE WE GOTTA KEEP THEM HAPPY. WITHOUT THE FANS WE WOULDN’T EXIST. I’M A CHAMPION. IF ANY COMPETITOR DOESN’T SEE HIMSELF AS THE VICTOR, THEN HE NEED NOT COMPETE. HE SHOULD NEVER STEP ONTO THAT PLATFORM. WE CAN NEVER PREDICT THE FUTURE, BUT I LITERALLY GIVE MY ALL, MIND BODY AND SOUL, SO I NEVER LOSE. THATS HD! IF YOU STAY READY, YOU AINT GOT TO GET READY!

4. AFTER WATCHING RANDY GO AGAINST BROCK WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY?

PERSONALLY, I WOULD NEVER TRY TO WRESTLE WITH MR. LESNAR. BUT THATS ME. I WOULD HAVE SNIPED HIM FROM THE OUTSIDE!

5. WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF YOUR DOG TAGS?

DAD DIED WHEN I WAS 6 YEARS OLD. SOME YEARS LATER OUR GRANDMOTHER GAVE MY BROTHER, DREW, AND ME OUR DAD’S DOG TAGS. WE WERE TEENS THEN AND BEGAN WEARING THESE EVERY DAY. TWELVE YEARS WENT BY AND ONE DAY, ON OUR FIRST ROAD TRIP ACROSS THE COUNTRY WITH OUR COUSIN, RAWN, DREWS DOG TAG BROKE OFF OF HIS NECK AND WAS LOST FOREVER ON THE BEACH IN SAN DIEGO. WE DESPERATELY SEARCHED FOR IT. AFTER AN HOUR WE HEARD DREW SAY “WELP” AND WATCHED HIM WALK OFF. WE FOLLOWED QUIETLY. HE WALKED STRAIGHT INTO A TATOO SHOP AND GOT THE TAG WITH ALL THE INFORMATION TATTOOD AROUND HIS NECK! “HYPEorDIE” STARTED RIGHT THERE!

6. HOW DID YOU END UP WITH DUKE ROUFUS?

I’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO BE THE BEST. SO, TO BE THE BEST, YOU’VE GOT TO TRAIN WITH THE BEST. AND ZEUS ROUFUS IS THE BEST!

7. YOUR FAMILY WAS A VICTIM OF HURRICANE KATRINA, HOW DID THAT EFFECT THINGS FOR YOU?

KATRINA EXEMPLIFIED THE FACT THAT NOTHING LASTS FOREVER AND THAT YOU CAN ONE DAY HAVE IT ALL AND THEN LOSE IT ALL TOO FAST. TAKE PRECAUTIONS IN EVERYTHING, ALWAYS HAVE BACKUPS, AND BE ABLE TO ADAPT IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE! CAUSE LIFE EVENTS ARE UNPREDICTABLE. DON’T TAKE THINGS FOR GRANTED.

8. SOME PEOPLE SAY YOU MIGHT BE THE BEST HEAVYWEIGHT STRIKER IN THE UFC, WHAT DO YOU SAY ABOUT THAT?

I’D AGREE AND SAY THANK YOU FOR NOTICING. AND IN AN ATTEMPT TO NOT BE CONCEITED I’D SAY I’LL BE SURE TO PROVIDE EVIDENCE THAT’LL PROVE THEIR WORDS RIGHT. I’M A PURE STRIKER. I HIT HARD AND RARELY MISS.

9. IS THE UFC READY FOR YOU?

MAAAN, WERE CUCUMBERS READY TO BE PICKLED? NAHHH! BUT GUESS WHAT. PICKLES ARE DELICIOUS!!! BUT SERIOUSLY, THE UFC IS READY AND HAS BEEN WAITING. I HEARD JOE ROGAN SAY ONCE THAT “WE HAVE YET TO SEE AN ELITE-LEVEL STRIKER IN THE OCTAGON”. WELL HERE I COME!

That’s what I’m talking about baby. I’m in vegas right now. Wish I could be here for the fight but I’m puttin my money down right now. Pat has been ready for this for years. UFC fans, get your tivo ready and go ahead and pre order the fight tape cause it will be a classic. That Priestly gene is strong. You boys better protect everything in that ring cause a kick from those legs will put you down on the mat no matter where he hits you. Kick that AZZ……

OMG! I’m beaming with pride! I used to love watching you win gymnastics competitions. Then your KNOCKOUTS make your kickboxing matches so exciting! Now you’re headed to do major DAMAGE in the UFC! I saw everything you put into your training when i just visited you and WOW, Pat! You’re amazing. So many of your teamates came up to me an told me that you were MONSTER and a KILLER! They asked me if you used to beat me up when we were kids lol and I told them you are the most caring, gentle and sweet person i know other than Ja, of course. And you always had muscles and big strong legs and now it’s all coming into fruition. Remember that there’s a reason you have friends all over the world. And have you noticed other fighters are showing you love an respect, too? It’s because you’re tapping into all that potential. You are the personification of Hype or Die! Love you lil brother and no doubt you’ll represent hard for the N.O. and for your gym, like always.

But it’s alright as long as you keep kickin peoples heads off I’m cool. I can’t wait til they give you a shot at Lesner and the title so you can show that fool what’s up and bring that belt back to the BIG N.O. BASED ON A TRUE STORY…

HYPEorDIE, it was conceived, defined, and it’s being lived. It seems as if enough has already been said by those who have evidently been paying close attention =)
And for those who haven’t gotten around to this post or viewing Pat in action you all will enjoy seeing for yourselves the skill, talent, and prowess this big ass polar bear possesses.

    HYPEorDIE shopping list:
Laaate night practice, feet on concrete, energy drinks, befriending everyone, road trips, domino’s pizza – but really papa john’s, B-movies, “breakfast”, the cover on the floor you don’t use, the game, the east run, random music, Olympus, train like a monster, sweat like a demon, not letting the body quit, knowing how to understand, shut up and be cool, and some go-to-the-moon-and-back on the side…

Life moves fast. Either you run with it or you’re the spectator. HD runs

I remember the 1st time I saw Pat “strike-kick”. It was in New Orleans 1983. he was young just developing his skills, speed & power. It was awesome & humorous to see him devestate his opponent. Today he is “The Man”, to watch & watchout for. He will give you a thrill & a laugh. UFC are U ready?

Pat, strike and kick some A– for me & Ms. Pam Humphrey your MOM’s best friend.

    Hey Pat!
The page looks amazing. I don’t know too much about cucumbers and pickles. BUT from what I’ve learned about you from Andrew, I do know that the hard work, dedication, and true talent you’re bringing to the table is exactly what the UFC has been waiting for–a much needed lesson on the meaning of HYPEorDIE! My origami fortune teller said so! 🙂

    Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!

TAPPIN187— i’ve been training my ground game for a solid 5 months now. i’ve gotten more comfortable there, but it’s still not my home. training with Red and the rest of my teammates has helped me to grow stronger. if taken to the ground, fingers crossed that doesn’t happen, i’ve been learning how to explode back to my feet where the ball is back in my court. anti take downs has been one of the main focusses.

DUKE ROUFUS ACADEMY TAKEN OVA THE WORLD! you all have been there with me from day one, and your gonna be there with me on the 27th. we’re all getting in the octagon that night. that’s why victory is certain, cause Mr. Evensen isn’t just fighting me. hes going to war with every time Rob Smith scarfed me unconcious, every time Kaz put his elbo in my eye, every time Red submitted me knowing i was gonna have to do 10 burpees! for every time i almost had a good move on Gary and he bent my fingers so i would let him go, thats gotta be illega, hah! every time ZEUS yelled at everybody in the gym for sucking then slipped in a New Orleans or Amsterdam comment and we all knew he was talking to me, hah! he’s going to war with all the times i landed a body shot or low kick on everyone in the gym, except Paul and Chico, oooh its coming fellas! that one time LUNCHBOX slamed me on my back after walking me around the gym. he’s going to war with all those burritos i couldnt eat cause i didn’t deffend the move that pulls your bottom row of teeth off! he’s fighting a guy who got his eye kicked out by ANTHONY. and i bet he hasn’t had PAUL or ISAC lay on him for 20 minutes. for all the times DAVE tried to explain to me how to get from under him by using 10th dan jedi terminology, “you gotta double single shrimp this leg and umpa scarf my arm while i wizzer your face”. MAN WHAT????? i’m bringing home a win for all the times Duke told us we only had one more to do and what he really meant was 6 more, and some burpees. for all the times i got kicked in the nuts while holding pads for high kicks, thanks REY! for all the times i got choked to death by CHRIS’s foot. For all the times DAN watched me run slow then gave me the dissapointed face! for all the times STAN spit in my face and yelled SQUALL at me! for all the times i forgot to bring my card! for all the times mom got off the phone with me without saying by and i sat there like a jack! and mostly i’m BRINGING THE THUNDER for all the people out there who think my last name is BERRY! it’s BARRY. B”A”RRY! thank you all for all the love and support! we’re gonna do it big dec 27th.

I’ve known Pat for more than a few years now… Fortunate to have met Pat in N.O. a few months before Katrina changed everything, everything except Pat-he never wavered or lost focus. He just trained harder, knowing that the only thing he could change and make better was himself… Privileged in “05 to travel with Pat & Duke to Tokyo for Pat’s K-1 fight in “The Dome” and grateful to be there on Dec 27th when he make’s his UFC debut at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas (sound’s great Pat, doesn’t it?)!… Lucky to see Pat almost everyday now since he moved to Milwaukee. We are so proud of you, your hard work and dedication. Your Mom, Brother Drew, Sisters Nise and Chris and Jahi are beaming with pride. Anytime you feel a moment of loneliness just close your eyes and I promise you will feel the love of everyone of us here. You know how your family is.
I find myself looking at UFC on Spike tv for hours. When the teams like Mir and Noregita (not sure of the spelling), compete it get to be like a soap. You watch them in the house and then follow them to the gym for the fight it is so addictives. I’m HOOK. I guess you could say I’m HYPE.:) We will all be glued to ppv on 12/27, to see the WIN.
